Some typical unacceptable practices by junk debt buyers (aka bottom feeders) include pursuing debts that are not actually owned by the consumer; harassment or verbal abuse; multiple listings of the same debt on credit reports; and attempting to collect a debt that has exceeded the statute of limitations.

Most bottom feeders use the practice of "re-aging" debts which means that they report it to credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Trans Union, and Experian) as more recent than it is to ruin your credit. This raises the interest rate you pay on credit cards, car loans, mortgages, and increases your insurance costs (car, health & life) usually by leaps & bounds.

Never make a "good faith" payment on any debt that you believe is beyond the statute of limitations. "We only need 5 bucks to hold your account." This is an old trick used by bottom feeders to trick consumers because it resets the statute of limitations & the 7 year clock. "Good faith" payments are also a sneaky way to gain access to your bank account - so they can garnish it at a later date.
